Biography

Assaf Gavron was Born in 1968, and published four novels (Ice, Moving, Almost Dead and Hydromania), a collection of short stories (Sex in the cemetery), and a non-fiction collection of Jerusalem falafel-joint reviews (Eating Standing Up). His fiction has been translated into German, Russian, Italian, French, English and Dutch. His English translation, Almost Dead, was published in 2010 by HarperCollins in the US, Harper Canada in Canada, and 4th Estate in the UK (as CrocAttack).
Among the prizes he won are the Israeli Geffen award for the novel Hydromania and the prestigious DAAD artists-in-Berlin fellowship in Germany. Almost Dead is shortlisted to the ADEI-WIZO prize in Italy, the winner of which will be announced on November 8th 2010.
His fiction was also was adapted for the stage in Habima - Israel's national theatre, and three of his novels were optioned for movies by Israeli and international film producers.

As a translator of fiction, he is responsible for the highly-regarded English-to-Hebrew translations of J.D. Salinger's Nine Stories, Philip Roth's Portnoy's Complaint and Jonathan Safran Foer's novels. He also co-translated his own Almost Dead from Hebrew to English.

He was the chief writer of the prize-winning computer game Peacemaker; and has contributed to numerous newspapers and magazines, writing on subjects ranging from sports to politics, and from music to food.

As the captain of Israel's national writers' and poets' soccer team, It led it in four international games against Germany and England, in Berlin, Tel Aviv and London.

Gavron is the singer and main songwriter of cult pop group The Foot and Mouth. The group released four albums, six years apart from each other. The next album will be out in 2013.

Son of English immigrants, he grew up in a small village near Jerusalem, and currently lives in Berlin. Lived for ten years in London, England and for a year in Vancouver, Canada.
